These pages came out from under the lino — old carpet layers in the house, great-grandparents’ idea of underlay, a newspaper special on 100 years of colonisation waiting in the dark. That find is the point of the post as much as the anniversary it sells. The theme is the centenary of British settlement (First Fleet, 1788 → 1888 birthday culture): arrival pictures, progress talk, the colony congratulating itself in print.
Read the mastheads on the photos before you swear to a print day. A Daily Mirror slug can mean a later tabloid reprint of the hundred-years story rather than a paper hot off an 1888 press — the anniversary being remembered is still the centenary, not the 1938 one-hundred-and-fiftieth. For a cleaner 1888 scrapbook see 100 Years of Sydney – Centenary and the companion Sydney Centenary gallery.
Keep the nine liftout images and the under-the-lino story. Caption from what the page actually shows; don’t invent a publisher’s warehouse history.
