The Royal Visit 1954
3 February 1954, Farm Cove: Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh step ashore from the Gothic, the first reigning British monarch to set foot in Australia. Sydney stopped for bunting, newsreels and a motorcade; the national tour ran to 1 April and finished at Fremantle, and these photographs record that summer’s crowds and ceremony.
Sydney highlights: Farm Cove landing and the Royal Progress on day one; Cenotaph and Government House; the opening of NSW Parliament; children’s mass gatherings (SCG, Showground, Centennial Park, Concord); Bondi’s surf lifesaving display; Newcastle and the country legs; then the 18 February farewell at West Circular Quay before Hobart.
This is not the 1920 Prince of Wales visit, and it is not a later Elizabeth tour. A companion 1954 gallery on this blog carries the same story. Keep the pictures as people-and-bunting history.
