This is my big scrapbook of drawings, prints and paintings of Sydney, from the First Fleet artists through to the mid-twentieth century. The early colonial views are here – William Dawes' 1789 sketch of Sydney Cove, James Heath and Joseph Lycett, the French expedition artists Lesueur and de Sainson, John Skinner Prout, Conrad Martens and S. T. Gill. Alongside them are the later artists who went looking for what was left of the old town: Lionel Lindsay, Sydney Ure Smith, Alfred Coffey, Gayfield Shaw, Cedric Emanuel and many more.
The pictures are in rough alphabetical order by title. I've given each one its title, artist and date where I know them. Where I've guessed, I've said so, and if you can put a name or a place to any of the unknowns, I'd love to hear from you.
