The Sydney Light Rail Project – Circular Quay to Randwick – Mid-2000s – Sydney – New South Wales 

The title’s mid-2000s is the trap. Trams came back to George Street in December 2019, not in some quiet mid-decade works package. The CBD and South East Light Rail — Circular Quay along George to Central, through Surry Hills to Moore Park, then the fork to Randwick and Kingsford — went into major construction in October 2015. Circular Quay to Randwick carried passengers from 14 December 2019; Kingsford from 3 April 2020. About twelve kilometres, nineteen stops, and a city that had not seen a George Street tram since 1961.

This is not the Inner West line from Central out to Dulwich Hill, which is a different wire and an earlier story. The hundreds of photos here are a walker’s dump of the job — pits in George Street, stops appearing, the day the wires went live. If a frame is clearly Circular Quay, the QVB, Central, Surry Hills, Moore Park, Randwick or Anzac Parade, say so. If it isn’t, “light-rail works” is enough.
