William Dampier

William Dampier (1651–1715) was an English navigator, explorer and writer whose voyages took him across the Pacific and Indian Ocean. In 1688 he became one of the earliest English visitors to parts of the Australian coast, recording observations later published in A New Voyage Round the World. His journals contributed to European knowledge of Australia, while reflecting the limited and colonial viewpoint of his era.
