Waterloo Congregational Church occupies 103–105 Botany Road, Waterloo. A Congregational cause was established here in the late 1850s: an early chapel and Sabbath school opened at Botany Road near Buckland Street in 1858, and a later chapel stood on the present site from the mid-1860s. The present substantial church building — facing Botany Road — had its foundation stone laid on 24 November 1883 and opened for worship in July 1884, with the older building retained for a time as a schoolroom. Contemporary reports described a neat brick church seating several hundred.
The building is listed as a local heritage item (Congregational Church Including Interior”) under the City of Sydney LEP. It has remained a recognised Congregational church site into the twenty-first century (Waterloo Congregational Church Incorporated appears on the national charities register at this address). Surrounding metro and over-station development has repeatedly treated the church lot as an excluded heritage parcel. The present 1884 church on the Botany Road site followed an earlier 1865 chapel; Waterloo remains a recognised Congregational church site, so the older claim that it was “no longer a church” is too strong.
