This is a collection of civic Sydney, not a walking tour of one year. The files run from Parliament House and the Treasury through banks, schools, churches, mortuary stations, Government House, harbour panoramas and HMS Galatea at Farm Cove — a ship remembered for the Duke of Edinburgh’s 1867–71 Australian cruise, which already tells you the camera (or the copy-camera) is working a wider window than “the 1880s.”
What the set is good for is comparison. Barnet-era government offices on Macquarie and Bridge Streets sit beside St Andrew’s and St Mary’s (the temporary cathedral plate is a reminder that the stone cathedral had a life in pieces). Mortuary Station at Redfern, Glebe Island abattoirs, Darlinghurst Court House and Gaol, the Exhibition Building, Mrs Macquarie’s Fort, Cockatoo and Spectacle islands — these are the city’s working diagram: worship, punishment, meat, ceremony, navy.
Many plates match the well-travelled illustrated books and Government Printer views of the 1870s–80s.
