Call it a 1870s–80s New South Wales view folder and you won’t fight the pictures. The title pins Blue Mountains and 1879, but the first plates are pure Sydney: Government House, the brand-new Garden Palace, the Great Synagogue, the Australian Museum, St Andrew’s, Cook in Hyde Park, the Town Hall — then the train finally climbs to the Zig Zag, Govetts Leap, Weatherboard Falls, Joadja shale, Eskbank iron, Lithgow Valley huts. Someone’s album mixed the showpiece capital with the mountain and western industrial tourist trail.
1879 is a useful hinge, not a handcuff. The Garden Palace went up for the 1879 International Exhibition; Cook’s statue was unveiled that year; the Zig Zag had already been working since the late 1860s. Joadja’s shale town and Eskbank’s ironworks belong to the same “come and see the colony’s engine room” habit. Don’t date every waterfall 1879, and don’t pretend the Sydney civic plates are Katoomba.
