A Series of Lithographic Drawings – Sydney & Its Environs – Coloured & Plain Lithographs

Twelve years before Fowles went to copper, Sydney already had a print salesman with a plan. In April 1836, John Gardiner Austin advertised A Series of Lithographic Drawings of Sydney and its Environs — twenty-four views of the principal public buildings, in six parts of four, coloured or plain, from his shop in Hunter Street. The filenames on this post give the cast list: St James’ and the Supreme Court, Fort Macquarie, the old Domain windmill, Hyde Park Barracks under the older name Prisoners’ Barracks, the Governor’s bathing house, the Catholic chapel, Government House. That is Macquarie’s town still standing in stone, drawn for subscribers who wanted “correct” views.

Austin is the publisher-lithographer; catalogue records often give Robert Russell as draughtsman for the set. Fort Macquarie in these views is Bennelong Point before the Opera House; the bathing house and windmill are Domain furniture most Sydneysiders have only met in pictures.

Use the gallery as an 1830s index — earlier, softer, and more “spot the building” than Fowles’s continuous shopfronts.
