SHIPS THAT MADE UP THE FIRST FLEET

Eleven ships, not “quite a few,” and none of them was an HMAS. That’s a RAN prefix from 1911. The window on Cathedral Street is doing commemorative glass, not Admiralty spelling.

Arthur Phillip took the convoy out of Portsmouth on 13 May 1787: two navy ships, HMS Sirius and HMS Supply; six convict transports — Alexander, Scarborough, Prince of Wales, Lady Penrhyn, Charlotte, Friendship; three storeships — Fishburn, Golden Grove, Borrowdale. Botany Bay 18–20 January 1788, then Port Jackson on the 26th. About 1,400–1,500 people embarked, depending whose muster you trust; don’t freeze a single headcount on a pane of glass.

The photographs are of the Fellowship of First Fleeters headquarters — First Fleet House, 105 Cathedral Street, Woolloomooloo — not of eleven hulls on the harbour. The Fellowship formed in 1968 and opened this house in 1988. Caption the window as a window. The other Cathedral Street post on this blog is the people plaques out the front; this one is the ships.
