This post is the pair — Centennial Park and Queens Park, created together under the Centennial Celebrations Act 1887 and dedicated in 1888 as part of Premier Henry Parkes’s people’s-park vision on the old Sydney Common / Lachlan Swamps water reserve. Centennial took the grand Victorian drives, ponds and ceremonial amphitheatre — later the site of the 1 January 1901 Federation inauguration and today’s Tzannes Federation Pavilion (1988) housing the Federation Stone. Queens Park, on the eastern edge (about 26 hectares), shares the 1888 dedication but was slower to develop because of drainage and swampy ground. An eleven-hole golf layout appeared in the mid-1890s before the club moved on; from the 1930s the flatter ground became organised sports fields still used by schools and clubs, framed by sandstone cliffs, large figs and ridge lookouts toward the city. Together with Moore Park the two parks form the Centennial Parklands Trust landscape.
