Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney

The Royal Botanic Garden Sydney wraps the eastern shore of Farm Cove — Gadigal land inside the old Governor’s Domain, where the 1788 government farm tried and mostly failed before the ground became a scientific garden. The traditional foundation date is 13 June 1816, when Mrs Macquarie’s Road around the Domain was finished and Macquarie’s enclosure began to work as a botanic garden. Soldier-gardener Charles Fraser steered the early collecting years; Moore and Maiden later made the seawalls, lawns and public institution you still walk.

Australia’s oldest botanic garden, and one of its oldest continuously running scientific outfits; the “Royal” title arrived in 1959. This post is simply a long photo walk — palms, harbour edge, monuments, seasonal beds. For the longer Farm Cove chronology see the main Royal Botanic Garden essay on this blog.

Sydney’s Royal Botanic Garden was established in 1816 on the site of Governor Macquarie’s early Domain. It is Australia’s oldest scientific institution and remains a major centre for plant collections, research and public gardens.
