The Rocks at Night – August 2017

August 2017, after dark in The Rocks — Sydney’s oldest colonial shoreline precinct, when the day-tour coaches have gone and the sandstone lanes go back to sodium and shop-window light. This is the western edge of Sydney Cove: pubs, terraces, bond stores and staircases that have been cleared, argued over, conserved and sold as atmosphere for two centuries.

You don’t need another First Fleet essay to enjoy a night walk. Cadman’s, Campbell’s Stores, Observatory Hill above, the Bridge’s underbelly, the sense that Barangaroo’s new shoreline is only a few minutes west — those are the neighbours.
