The Story Of Old George Street - Sydney Mail - Wednesday 14th August 1918 - Page 8

George Street was Sydney's first street – the old track up from the Cove that became the High Street and was named George Street by Governor Macquarie in 1810. In 1918 the Sydney Mail ran a series called “The Story of George-Street – A Chapter in Old Sydney”, and this instalment picks up the walk at the corner of George and Essex streets, where the first gaol stood.

It's packed with the names of the old shopkeepers and publicans. Among them are the Thorntons, and there's the story of the first Sydney Herald, printed on 18 April 1831 – the paper we now know as the Sydney Morning Herald. The article runs to ten parts, and I've put them in reading order.

Edgecliff - Auctions And Sale Of Estates

Estate agents' subdivision plans are among my favourite things in the State Library's collection. They show the moment a suburb changed from a handful of big houses in their own grounds to the streets we know today. These plans cover Edgecliff and its neighbours, Woollahra, Darling Point and Double Bay. They run from the Mills & Pile and Batt, Rodd & Purves sales of 1886 right through to the Wallaroy Estate auction of March 1929.

Many of them carry the names of the old houses whose grounds were being cut up: Wallaroy, Glanworth, Dilbhur, Kilvington, Brantwood, Orielton, Hillside, “Quiraing” and “Eynesbury”. Raine & Horne, Richardson & Wrench, Hardie & Gorman and H. W. Horning all turn up as auctioneers, some of the sales held “on the ground” on a Saturday afternoon. The plans come from the State Library of NSW's Edgecliff subdivision plans collection. I've captioned each one from the details printed on the plan.
