One hundred plates is not a photographer’s autobiography. It is a view folder — harbour, civic pile, waterfall, railway, bore — the sort of stock the State Library still dates about 1879–1892 because that is when the Government Printer and the tourist bureaux were selling “NSW picturesque” by the yard. The Picturesque NSW post on this blog is the sampler. This is the same trade with the civic and the country left in.
Read it in bands. First the harbour: Hornby at South Head, Mosman and Double Bay, Garden Island still an island, Farm Cove, Circular Quay from Customs House. Then the town in stone — Government House, Lands, the GPO, Town Hall and the Centennial Hall interior, St Andrew’s, St Mary’s from the Domain, the university colleges, Redfern station. Then the streets. Then Audley in The National Park, Katoomba and Govetts Leap, the Zig Zag, Newcastle, the Clarence, Moree bores.
Two date traps. Ku-ring-gai Chase was not a national park until 1894 — those Pittwater titles are later naming or the folder window is loose. Centennial Hall opened in 1889, so that interior cannot be an 1879 negative. Garden Palace grounds after the 1882 fire is a ruin lawn, not Barnet’s palace in glory. Don’t pin one photographer on the whole hundred without a catalogue page.
