Tank Stream Way is what Australia Square left behind of old Hamilton Street — a Bridge Street scrap renamed in 1981 so the colony’s first town watercourse still has a street sign even though the water itself has long since been piped into a drain under the towers.
Hamilton Street once pushed toward Hunter Street and took its name from the Hamilton biscuit-works neighbourhood. Most of that alignment vanished when the Australia Square podium and tower remade the block in the 1960s. What remains is fine-grain CBD: warehouse doorways, short cuts, and — in neighbouring Bridge Lane — the old entry now swallowed into The Establishment hotel. By the late nineteenth century this pocket had filled with warehouses and tea merchants; the live post’s memory of vacant cottage land into the 1860s is the right before-picture.

Tank Stream Way Was Once Part Of Hamilton Street Which ran From Bridge And Hunter Streets, Named After Hamilton's Biscuit Factory. Most Of It Disappeared Underneath The Australia Square Development, Leaving Two Remnant Laneways, And This Section Was Renamed In 1981. In Bridge Lane, Once The Site Of The Towns first Lumber Yards, Look For The Old Warehouse Doorway, Now The Entrance To The Establishment Hotel. As Late As The 1860's There Was Still Vacant Land Sliced Between The Cottages In This Area, But By The End Of The 19th Century It Had Become A Favoured Location for Warehouses, Including Several Tea Merchants Stores.
